Fabrication of flexible wired electrodes for brain signal recording applications

چکیده :
Flexible neural electrodes represent a critical advancement in brain-computer interfaces, offering superior mechanical compliance to brain tissue compared to rigid probes, thereby minimizing micromotion artifacts, chronic inflammation, and glial scarring for long-term signal recording. This work introduces a novel fabrication method using ultrafine copper wires (80 µm) electroplated with gold and platinum, embedded in a dual-layer Kapton polymeric matrix via 3D- printed stereolithography molding and lamination, ensuring robust, continuous electrical connections without brittle thin- film cracking. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in PBS revealed predominantly capacitive behavior in the clinical EEG band (0.5–70 Hz), with |Z| < 90 mΩ·cm² for gold-coated and < 184 mΩ·cm² for platinum-coated electrodes under OCP and low-bias conditions, confirming low-polarization interfaces ideal for high signal-to-noise ratio chronic neural recording. This scalable, cost-effective approach outperforms traditional sputtering-based electrodes in flexibility and stability, holding significant promise for next-generation neuroprosthetics and clinical brain monitoring applications.
