Enhanced Forward Model for Photoacoustic Imaging with Speed of Sound Compensation

Abstract—Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is a hybrid modality that combines the high optical contrast of biological tissues and the deep penetration of acoustic waves, making it a valuable tool for medical imaging. However, acoustic heterogeneity in the medium leads to image distortions, blurring, and artifacts. To address these issues, an enhanced forward model was developed using speed of sound (SOS) data from ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) to correct wave propagation paths. Simulations were performed on heterogeneous media, one with two layers and point-like phantoms, and the other with three layers and a vascular phantom. Image reconstruction was performed using back-projection (BP) and model-based (MB) approaches with various regularization techniques. Quantitative results demonstrated that shearlet-regularized MB reconstruction improved peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) by 9.11 dB and structural similarity index (SSIM) by 0.59 compared to conventional BP and constant SOS methods, confirming the model’s effectiveness in mitigating acoustic heterogeneity.
