Design of an Optical Current Transformer for High-Voltage Gas-Insulated Switchgear-Part I: Focus on Optical Sensor Design

چکیده :
Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) are increasingly adopted in electrical networks due to their compact design, enhanced safety, and superior reliability compared to Air-Insulated Substations (AIS). Traditional magnetic current transformers (CTs) are hindered by limitations such as large size, high cost, and susceptibility to saturation. Optical Current Transformers (OCTs), utilizing optical fibers as sensing media, overcome these challenges by offering reduced size and weight, higher accuracy, and greater resilience to external influences. Integrating OCTs in GIS also reduces the weight and length of busbars and minimizes SF6 gas consumption. Despite these advantages, no comprehensive study has provided a detailed, step-by-step design of an Optical Current Sensor (OCS) specifically tailored for GIS applications. This paper introduces an optimized design for an OCS, developed specifically for GIS environments, and validates its performance and accuracy through software-based modeling. Furthermore, the study discusses the challenges and limitations associated with implementing OCTs in substations.
