A Simulation of Bayesian Surprise

چکیده :
The emotion of surprise is of particular interest among the other basic emotions as it can be approached by computational approaches and for which mathematical models exist. This paper explains the cognitive purposes that this emotion serves and the connections that it has with the fields of machine learning, neuroscience, information theory, and psychology. The main contribution of this paper is to enter the debate revolving around its computational modeling and argue for the generality of Bayesian surprise. This is done by providing a computer simulation that applies the formula of Bayesian surprise in a rock-paper-scissors experiment and notices that the two fundamental aspects of this emotion, known as puzzlement surprise and enlightenment surprise, are both capture by a single formula.
