A 2.4 GHz Low Phase Noise Voltage Controlled Oscillator With Low Supply Voltage and Robust Start-Up for WLAN Standard in 0.13µm CMOS Technology

This paper presents a novel low-voltage and low phase noise voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with a robust start-up. The core of the proposed VCO circuit is a cross-coupled LC oscillator which employs a RC-biased structure to prevent the NMOS transistors from entering deep triode region. The analysis supports this theory and also demonstrates that as the carrier power (the power of the output signal) is increased, the phase noise is reduced. The phase noise reduction technique includes increasing the quality factor and the output voltage swing of the oscillator. As a result of using varactors at the output, the tank capacitance is directly changed and a tuning range of 9.5% has been achieved. The implemented VCO has been simulated in TSMC 0.13 µm CMOS technology. The oscillation frequency is 2.4 GHz with a current consumption of almost 5.17 mA drawn from a single voltage supply of 0.6-V. The simulated phase noise is -122.1 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset and -131.7 dBc/Hz at 3 MHz offset from the carrier frequency. Based on the results, the proposed VCO is appropriate for the WLAN wireless standard.
