Experimental Demonstration of a Tunable Plasma Frequency Selective Surface Based on Electrically Driven Microdischarge Cells

Plasma-based frequency selective surfaces (PFSS) provide an effective approach for achieving reconfigurable electromagnetic responses without relying on semiconductor tuning elements. By exploiting the voltage-dependent dispersive properties of microdischarge plasma, such structures can offer high power handling capability and robust operation under harsh electromagnetic conditions. In this work, a voltage-tunable PFSS based on dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) microcells is designed, fabricated, and experimentally evaluated. The RF transmission characteristics, quantified through free-space measurements of the S21 parameter, are investigated for both plasma OFF and plasma ON states under three applied peak voltages (1, 5, and 10 kV). The experimental evaluation accounts for the fabricated electrode geometry, plasma ignition behavior, and discharge stability, supported by optical and photographic observations. The measured results demonstrate a clear voltage-dependent stopband response, with the center frequency shifting from approximately 10.6 GHz at low drive levels to about 9.2 GHz under higher excitation, while the transmission notch deepens from approximately −8 dB to −36 dB. These experimental observations confirm the feasibility of voltage-controlled tunability based on plasma activation. The proposed PFSS shows strong potential as a reconfigurable, high-power-tolerant surface for RADOME and adaptive EM-control applications.
