Low Power and Wide Tuning Range Five-Stage Ring Voltage Controlled Oscillators

چکیده :
A new five-stage ring voltage controlled oscillator (RVCO) with low power consumption and wide frequency tuning range is presented in this work. The proposed VCO is configured based on the inverter cell employing a MOS transistor between the inverter transistors to more easily control output oscillation frequency. This idea decreases the power dissipation of the proposed VCO too. Additionally, by modifying the proposed circuit, another more integrable configuration of RVCO is presented for oscillating at higher frequencies. By coupling two identical modified RVCOs through the voltages of common source nodes, new structure of multiphase can be proposed. The proposed VCOs have been designed in 180 nm technology with power supply voltages of 1.8 V. The proposed RVCOs have been designed to oscillate at 850 MHz and 1.35 GHz, respectively. The average currents that the first and second proposed RVCOs draw from the supply voltages are 757 µA and 935 µA, respectively. The proposed RVCOs show good phase noise performance at their oscillation frequencies.
