An IoT-Based System for Water Consumption Optimization and Reliability Enhancement

Abstract— Water scarcity and growing operational failures in agricultural water distribution networks highlight the need for intelligent, reliability-aware management solutions. This paper presents an IoT-based monitoring and control framework designed to simultaneously reduce water consumption and enhance system reliability. The proposed architecture integrates flow, pressure, and voltage sensors with a GSM-enabled communication gateway and a centralized analytics platform for real-time supervision. System reliability is quantitatively evaluated using Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) across ten pumping units, monitored over 42,566 operating hours with 93 recorded failures. Experimental results show that the proposed system reduces water consumption by approximately 15% while improving network stability by nearly 20%. Average system availability increased from 93.85% before IoT deployment to 96.12% after implementation, with the number of pumps achieving availability above 95% rising from three to eight. These results demonstrate that IoT-enabled monitoring combined with reliability-based analytics can significantly improve service continuity, reduce waste, and support sustainable water management in agricultural distribution networks.
