Optimal Sizing of Battery Energy Storage Systems: Nonlinear Battery Degradation and Topology Design

چکیده :
With the increasing penetration rate of renewable energy sources, energy storage systems (ESSs) have emerged as critical infrastructures in the modern power grids. One of their main challenges lies in the optimal sizing of battery energy storage systems to achieve technical performance and economic viability. This paper addresses the challenge through two significant innovations: first, by introducing a nonlinear depth-of-discharge-dependent maintenance cost model that encapsulates battery degradation effects into lifecycle cost estimation and enables techno-economic operational planning more realistically; second, by conducting a comparative analysis that investigates the optimal interconnection topology among the photovoltaic system, the energy storage system, and the grid, with which the maximum system efficiency and cost-effectiveness could be determined. Simulation and analysis of the results have been completed in MATLAB.
