Blind Electric Charge Calibration Through Non-Conventional Partial Discharge Measurement: A New Theoretical Approach

Partial Discharge (PD) defect is an unwanted phenomenon that is likely to occur everywhere that a High Voltage (HV) apparatus is utilized. PD is a hazardous defect that over time, cause the insulations of HV equipment to deteriorate gradually until a full breakdown occurs. In condition monitoring of HV insulation in means of PD level assessment, conventional measurement method of PD, in which a galvanic connection between sensor and HV apparatus is involved, has been well discussed and standardized in IEC 60270. But for non-conventional measurement methods in which no galvanic connections are involved (IEC 62478), there has been no method introduced for calibration of measurement system based on a background theory. In this work, a theoretical method for non-conventional measurement, without galvanic connection, is introduced and the developed theory is verified as a proof of the proposed concept. This method of measurement is blind, since in this non-conventional PD measurement method (where no galvanic connection exists), the charge transfer circuit parameters are unknown initially and at the end of proposed algorithm, they will be found. After applying this blind calibration method on a non-conventional PD measurement system, it would be valid for any further measurement while the calibration is not deviated.
