Microwave Dielectric Characterization of Liquids Using Double Split Elliptical Resonator Integrated With a PDMS-Based Sample Holder

چکیده :
This paper presents the design, simulation, fabrication, and experimental characterization of a high-frequency dielectric sensor based on a double-split elliptical resonator (DSER) integrated with a PDMS-based sample holder. The structure is fabricated by sputtering a 3 µm copper layer onto a soda-lime glass substrate and patterning it using standard photolithography, while a copper-foil ground plane is applied to the backside. A PDMS layer containing a 1 mm-radius cavity is bonded at the top of the resonator to enable controlled loading of low-volume material samples. The proposed resonator is optimized to achieve high sensitivity to variations in the dielectric constant of materials introduced into the sensing region, demonstrated by an 600 MHz resonance shift between air and deionized water at an operating center frequency of approximately 19 GHz that is higher than similar works. Electromagnetic simulations performed in CST Studio Suite show excellent agreement with measured S₁₁ parameter, confirming the accuracy of the electromagnetic model and the fabricated device. The experimantal results indicate that the proposed resonator is a compact, fabrication-compatible, and effective platform offers a promising solution for permittivity measurement of liquids and other small-volume samples at millimeter-wave frequencies.
