Angular Misalignment Effect on the Performance of Underwater MIMO OCC Systems

In recent years, optical camera communication (OCC) has attracted a lot of attention for a variety of applications, including underwater wireless communication, due to its spatial modulation feature and low cost. Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) has been used to compensate for the relatively low OCC data rate caused by the camera's low frame rates. However, in MIMO systems, angular misalignment between camera and transmitter surface increase interference between transmitters and reduce the link performance. In this study, using a comprehensive model of the underwater OCC (UOCC), the effect of angular misalignment between transmitter and receiver on the system performance is investigated. Results show the reduction of signal to noise and interference (SINR) for misalignment angle of 0 to π/4 for 1 m channel length is about 42 dB to 26 dB, 40 dB to 15 dB, and 25.5 dB to 9 dB for clear, coastal and harbour seawater, respectively
