Performance Assessment of Solar Carports as Campus Sustainability Infrastructure

چکیده :
As universities seek to advance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions, large parking areas offer untapped potential for renewable energy generation. This study evaluates three solar carport configurations across the southern, central, and western parking lots of Shahid Beheshti University’s Abbaspour campus, using PVsyst simulations to optimize tilt angles and orientations for maximum energy yield. The results indicate that the combined output of the three carports can reach approximately 2,050 MWh per year, covering a substantial share of the campus’s electricity demand. Notably, each carport on its own is capable of nearly meeting the campus’s summer electricity requirement of 825 MWh, underscoring their effectiveness and reliability as a clean energy solution. Beyond energy generation, solar carports provide shaded areas for comfort, highlighting their dual-purpose benefit. The findings underscore the value of integrating solar carports into campus infrastructure as a practical and effective step toward sustainable energy practices, reduced emissions, and enabling electric vehicle charging.
