چکیده :
Deciphering the neural feedback mechanisms underlying cognitive decision-making during reward and punishment processing is essential for understanding brain function. This study presents the first simultaneous electroencephalography-functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI) investigation of a modified gambling task, analyzed within a General Linear Model (GLM) framework. We recorded simultaneous high-density (65-channel) EEG and fMRI data from 24 participants during the task. Moving beyond conventional sensor-level EEG analyses in EEG-fMRI studies, our approach operates directly in the source domain, extracting time-series data of event-related potential (ERP) components and modeling them using a GLM. This method provides superior spatial resolution for pinpointing the neural substrates of decision-making. Our results show robust activation not only in established reward-processing regions but also, notably, in the olfactory cortex and fusiform gyrus—areas often overlooked in such research. We identified both distinct and overlapping neural substrates for reward and punishment: while the orbitofrontal cortex and insula responded to both winning and losing outcomes, each condition elicited unique activation patterns. Winning stimuli preferentially engaged the anterior cingulate cortex and superior orbitofrontal gyrus, whereas losing stimuli activated the cingulate cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, and medial superior frontal gyrus. These findings offer novel insights into the neural circuitry of reward processing and advance our understanding of the functional neuroanatomy of decision-making. Moreover, our ERP-informed fMRI methodology establishes a new framework for studying neurovascular coupling, enabling enhanced spatiotemporal precision in mapping cognitive processes to their neural foundations
