A Communication-Aware Scheduler for Containers in a Kubernetes Environment Using Girvan-Newman Clustering

چکیده :
Today, container technology has carved out a special place in cloud computing due to features such as ease of use and lower resource requirements compared to virtual machines. The issue of scheduling and mapping containers, which involves deciding which node each container should run on, is crucial due to its impact on resource efficiency and application performance. One of the main challenges in scheduling is managing the communications between containers. Placing containers on the appropriate node can reduce the latency in their communications or the volume of data transferred. In this study, a new approach to container scheduling based on a hierarchical clustering algorithm is proposed. The goal of this approach is to place containers that have a high volume of communication with each other in the same cluster, and then the algorithm tries to find a suitable node for placing this cluster. The results of implementing the proposed scheduler in a Kubernetes environment demonstrate a significant performance improvement, achieving a 2.62-fold increase compared to the default Kubernetes scheduler and a 2.66-fold improvement over a random scheduler. Additionally, the results indicate a decrease in data transfer volume between nodes and an increase within nodes.
