Compliance Assessment of Radiation Exposure from Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

چکیده :
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) are a key enabling technology for future sixth-generation (6G) wireless systems, promising significant improvements in spectral and energy efficiency by shaping the electromagnetic environment. However, the use of coherent beamforming inherent to RIS operation introduces critical challenges for electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation exposure compliance. This paper rigorously analyzes the impact of a planar RIS on radiation exposure relative to a baseline scenario where only the base station (BS) transmits. We formulate an optimization framework consists of Problem 1 (P1) which maximizes the total power density to define the worst-case, maximum potential exclusion zone for regulatory compliance, and Problem 2 (P2) minimizes the power density to quantify the capability of RIS to create localized safe zones through destructive interference. By comparing the spatial extent of the non-compliant regions against the baseline, this work provides essential insights for the safe and compliant deployment of RIS technology in network coverage area.
