A PLL-Based Sensor Fusion Scheme for Robust PMLSM Position Estimation Under Hall Sensor Misalignment

Accurate position measurement in permanent magnet linear synchronous motors (PMLSMs) is essential for implementing control algorithms and achieving precise mover control. In this paper, a common approach for position estimation using atan2 function and Hall sensor measurements is first examined. Then, a phase-locked loop (PLL) is introduced as a position and velocity estimator that utilizes magnetic field intensity information obtained from the Hall sensors. Unlike the conventional approaches that require precisely aligned sensors, the proposed method allows Hall sensors to be mounted at arbitrary positions by identifying their installation position and compensating them in the algorithm. Error analysis of the PLL method suggested the presence of harmonics in the magnetic field measurement. A Kalman filter was employed to minimize the effect of harmonics in the airgap. As discussed in this study, the PLL estimates position alongside velocity of the mover. In the Kalman filter both position and velocity estimates from the PLL were utilized. In this approach, a final position estimation standard deviation of 0.26 mm was achieved, effectively improving the accuracy compared to the previous methods and reducing cost by eliminating the strict sensor alignment requirement.
