چکیده :
Conventional single-pad functional electrical stimulation (FES) systems often cause rapid fatigue and poor selectivity. Array-based FES offers improved selective activation of forearm muscles, which will cause to have precise control of movement using FES. In this study, an array-based FES system was applied to the forearm of human subjects to restore finger movements, while the joint angles were measured using a motion capture system in real time. The results on one healthy and one spinal cord injury (SCI) subjects show that the Multi-electrode Array FES could selectively activate the target muscles and produced smoother and stable movements. Five distinct functional movements with physiological range of motion can be generated in SCI subject. These findings highlight the potential of array-FES systems to restore hand function in neurological rehabilitation.
