A Miniaturized Dual-Band Brain Implantable Antenna for Wireless Power Transfer and Neurological Monitoring

چکیده :
Implantable medical devices (IMDs) have gained significant attention in telemetry-based healthcare and real-time physiological monitoring. These devices can provide useful information about the function of different body tissues by monitoring the physiological signals of the tissue and transmitting the recorded signals to external devices. One of the most critical components of such systems is the implantable antennas, which can facilitate both data transmission with high data rate as well as powering the device via wireless power transfer for battery-free implants. In this paper, a dual-band planar inverted-F (PIFA) microstrip antenna is proposed with a highly compact dimensions of π × 16× 0.2 mm3 operating at 915 MHz and 2.45 GHz bands for wireless power transfer (WPT) and monitoring of neurological signals respectively. The antenna was designed with Rogers 3003 with ϵr=3 and tanδ=0.0013 as the substrate and superstrate of the antenna to enhance the bandwidth for higher data rate and to guarantee biocompatibility of the antenna with conductive biological tissues. A seven-layer planar human head model composed of scalp, fat, skull, dura, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), gray matter and white matter as well as anatomical model were adopted to evaluate the performance of the antenna. Under tissue-embedded conditions, impedance bandwidths of 188 MHz and 1.3GHz and the antenna gains of −32.6 dBi and −28.1 dBi was achieved at 915 MHz and 2.45 GHz bands respectively. For the proposed antenna, a good agreement was observed both in seven-layer planar model and anatomical model of human brain.
