چکیده :
This paper presents a comparative study of four practical beamforming network (BFN) design approaches for an X-band planar phased-array antenna consisting of 64 elements arranged in an 8×8 configuration. The operating frequency range is 10.5–11.0 GHz, targeting electronic beam steering in two dimensions. The investigated approaches include: (i) a centralized high-power amplifier with distributed phase shifters, (ii) a two-dimensional Butler matrix network, (iii) a beamformer integrated circuit (IC) solution, and (iv) a fully distributed transmit/receive (T/R) module architecture. Each approach is evaluated in terms of output power capability, insertion loss, noise figure, beamforming resolution, physical size, and implementation cost. Simulation and system-level analyses demonstrate the inherent trade-offs between cost, flexibility, scalability, and RF performance. The results provide practical guidelines for selecting an appropriate beamforming architecture for medium-scale X-band phased-array systems.
