Reconfigurable Terahertz Spatial Integrator Using a VO₂-Based Metasurface structure

چکیده :
This paper presents a reconfigurable vanadium dioxide (VO2)-based metasurface capable of performing first-order spatial integration in the terahertz (THz) domain. The design enables wave-based mathematical processing without analog-to-digital conversion, alleviating the speed and energy limitations of conventional electronic hardware. The metasurface consists of periodically arranged VO₂-loaded resonators whose insulator-to-metal transition provides dynamic control of the reflected wave. In the metallic state, the structure implements the desired integration operation, whereas in the insulating state, it behaves as a uniform mirror that reflects the incident wavefront. Full-wave finite-element method (FEM) simulations at 3.75 THz verify the integrator operation and the mirror-like state under Gaussian-beam excitation. Image-domain evaluations further demonstrate effective spatial integration for representative THz scenes. These results establish VO₂-based metasurfaces as compact, tunable, and energy-efficient platforms for emerging THz analog computing and computational imaging applications.
