Adaptive Rotor Speed Control of Wind Turbines Integrated with Pumped Hydro Energy Storage

چکیده :
The integration of wind power with large scale energy storage is essential for improving renewable energy (RE) utilization, particularly in isolated and weak power systems. Although pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) is widely recognized as an effective solution for mitigating wind variability, conventional wind turbine (WT) control strategies typically operate without considering storage conditions, resulting in avoidable energy curtailment. This paper presents a low complexity adaptive rotor speed (RS) control strategy for WTs coupled with a PHES system. The proposed approach introduces a smooth state of charge (SOC) dependent modification to the conventional MPPT/DSC rotor speed reference, enabling coordinated wind storage operation without relying on optimization algorithms or modifying inner torque and pitch angle (PA) control loops. Time domain simulations are performed on a 20 MW wind farm (WF) integrated with a PHES system featuring 20 MW pumping and 60 MW generating capacities. Results obtained under multiple operating scenarios show that the proposed strategy increases useful wind energy (WE) utilization by approximately 0.5–0.7% in moderate and highly fluctuating wind conditions and by up to 6.15% under high wind conditions. In addition, wind power curtailment is reduced by as much as 70% in sensitivity analysis, while storage utilization is significantly improved. Overall, the proposed SOC aware adaptive RS control provides a practical and computationally efficient solution for enhancing WE utilization and reducing curtailment in hybrid wind PHES systems.
