چکیده :
Clustered unit commitment (CUC) is widely used to accelerate long-term planning studies by aggregating identical units, yet the relative behavior of the main unit commitment (UC) formulations under clustering has not been systematically benchmarked. This paper proposes a unified framework to (i) rewrite the three main UC formulations—tight-and-compact (TC), two-binary (2-bin), and one-binary (1-bin)—under consistent modeling assumptions and unified notation, and (ii) derive their clustering-based counterparts through systematic aggregation rules. Under the proposed framework, strengthened ramping constraints are integrated in a uniform manner across all clustered formulations to maintain consistent modeling conditions. Numerical experiments on 20 test systems (comprising eight generator types) assess both computational time and relative cost error with respect to a UC baseline. The results indicate that formulation rankings in the clustered setting do not necessarily mirror those observed in the binary UC setting. Furthermore, incorporating strengthened ramping constraints consistently improves clustered-model performance by reducing relative cost error for all formulations and, on average, shortening solution time. These findings offer practical guidance for selecting UC formulations in clustering-based planning studies.
