Design and Baseline Evaluation of an RFID-Based Indoor Navigation Test Bench

While numerous electronic solutions have been pro posed to assist the navigation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, a low-cost test bench for the systematic evaluation of these devices prior to clinical trials remains conspicuously absent. In this study, we propose an integrated experimental test bench designed to assess the performance of RFID-based navigation aids. We formulate an analytical approach to the indoor navigation prob lem, introducing a Navigation Difficulty Index to quantify path complexity. To validate this test bench, we prototyped a shoe based navigation system employing a hexagonal grid of passive tags and Dijkstra’s algorithm. Baseline performance data were collected from twenty-seven blindfolded participants across two distinct scenarios. Our findings indicate that for untrained users, the proposed electronic guidance system significantly reduces boundary collisions compared to cane navigation. This paper establishes a systematized strategy and a baseline dataset to guide future researchers in the comparative evaluation of passive RFID based navigational aids.
