Dynamic State Estimation for Frequency and ROCOF Protection in Renewable-Integrated Grids Using PMU-Compliant Measurements

چکیده :
High penetration of renewable energy resources introduces fast frequency dynamics and increased uncertainty in distribution networks, challenging conventional frequency-based protection schemes. This paper proposes an integrated framework combining dynamic state estimation with frequency-based protection using PMU-compliant measurements. EKF, UKF, CKF, and innovation-adaptive CKF are employed to estimate voltage magnitude, system frequency, and ROCOF under renewable variability, faults, and islanding events. Simulation results on the IEEE 33-bus system show that while EKF, UKF, and CKF provide reliable estimation and protection performance, naive innovation-adaptive CKF may severely degrade protection dependability under extreme disturbances due to excessive covariance adaptation. The results highlight the importance of jointly evaluating estimation dynamics and protection outcomes when designing estimation-based frequency protection schemes.
