Fuzzy-Assisted PID Control for Nonlinear Drill-String Systems: Performance Enhancement and Comparative Evaluation

چکیده :
Torsional vibrations and stick–slip oscillations significantly degrade the performance and reliability of drilling systems operating under nonlinear bit–rock interaction. This paper proposes a fuzzy-assisted PID controller for a nonlinear four-degree-of-freedom drill-string system with actuator delay. The fuzzy PID adaptively tunes the controller gains in real time to handle system nonlinearities and uncertainties. Its performance is evaluated through comparative simulations against conventional PID, sliding mode control (SMC), and model predictive control (MPC). The results demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves substantial performance improvements, reducing the mean squared tracking error (MSE) by up to 49\% and shortening the settling time by up to 47\% compared with the competing control strategies. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the fuzzy-assisted PID as a low-complexity and robust solution for vibration suppression in drilling systems.
